The PGA Tour was sidelined for three months due to the COVID-19 pandemic and we still have not played the season’s first major championship, so you can be excused if you did not realize that the PGA Tour’s season is just about done.
This week, the world’s best players are in Memphis, Tennessee, for the WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational, but the FedEx Cup playoff series starts in three weeks.
As always, one of the keys to winning at TPC Southwind, aside from staying cool, is good iron play. Last season, Brooks Kopeka won the event by shooting 68-67-64-65 thanks to some timely putting and finishing 11th in strokes gained approach the green. His average for the week was 0.802, which means that the four-time major winner was gained almost a full-shot advantage over the average player in the field based on this iron play and shots from the fairway.
The second-place finisher last season, Webb Simpson, ranked fifth that week in strokes gained approach the green (1.279) and Marc Leishman, who finished third, was second in strokes gained approach the green (1.628).
Below is a list of the 10 golfers who lead the PGA Tour in strokes gained approach the green this season, along with the irons they currently have in their bag.
