Dressed in black and guided by the spirit of his former playing partner at the event Shane Warne, an emotional Ryan Fox claimed the Dunhill Links title at St. Andrews.
Much of the final day’s excitement surrounded Rory McIlroy, who is truly never out of a tournament these days, as he surged from 41st on Friday to tied fourth at the finish with a pair of 66’s.
Heading into Sunday Richard Mansell held a four shot lead but that lead was reeled in and passed after just seven holes by the Kiwi Fox and his red hot putter extended his advantage to three strokes with three to play.
Nerves kicked in over the closing holes but the 35 year old muscled and gouged his ball to a second win of the season, one shot ahead of Callum Shinkwin and Alex Noren.
Afterwards Fox told Sky’s Tim Barter: “To be honest the only person I can really think of at the moment is Warney. He meant a lot to me and this event and was a great mate. It’s a terrible shame he’s not here.”
Fox’s mother and father, former All Blacks legend Grant Fox, are on holiday in Europe and were present at St Andrews to witness their son’s win.
The win jumps Fox from 47th to a career high 25th in the latest Official World Golf Rankings.
