For anyone who ever doubted Rory McIlroy’s pedigree his performance at Quail Hollow was an exhibition of his will to win. The venue, where he was already the all time leading leading earner, fell perfectly for the Northern Irishman who was making his first start since a disappointing Masters. Having celebrated his 32nd birthday last Tuesday Rors edged Abraham Ancer by one shot, with Viktor Hovland and Keith Mitchell sharing third.
It wasn’t all plain sailing, there is still a latent destructive element to McIlroy’s game from the tee, and a two shot cushion playing the last was needed after a duck hooked fairway wood led to an unplayable penalty. But once a winner always a winner and Rory found the surface from 200 yards and ended the 18 months winless drought.

That was more than made up for with his TaylorMade Rors Proto irons hitting 54 greens in regulation, third in the field. In total he needed 116 putts for the week with his TaylorMade Spider X Hydro Blast putter circling 17 birdies versus five bogeys and a double. For the week he and ranked 3rd in Strokes Gained: Putting (6.945), 10th in Strokes Gained: Approach (5.269) and 9th in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green (7.816).
The win sees Rory climb from 13th to 7th in the latest world rankings.
