The Tournament Of Champions may have been more just “Tournament” than “Champions” this year but before we get too upset that its not the stellar cast of yesteryear, we should be grateful for the safe entertainment the PGA Tour continue to put on in January of 2021 despite a global pandemic.
For the newly crowned champion Harris English, this win was most definitely coming. Working with his team including Northern Irish swing coach Justin Parsons, English had finished 2020 with a run of big finishes and an unofficial win at the QBE Shootout alongside Matt Kuchar last time out.
Co-leading heading into the final round at Kapalua, English went quietly about structuring the perfect Sunday 69 ramping up the quality on the back nine. The biggest challenge to emerge would be from Chilean Joaquin Niemann whose final round charge saw him set the clubhouse lead before English calmly tapped in for birdie on 18 to invoke sudden death.
That would see Niemann struggle for par and 31 year old English calmly again hole for birdie to claim his first win since 2013.
With the victory and his fifth top 10 of the season in seven starts, English secures a two year exemption on the PGA Tour and jumps to a career high 17th in the latest World Rankings. He and the Tour move on to the Sony Open this week.
