With all the talk before the event about how Bryson was going to do this that and the other to poor old Augusta, Dustin Johnson was quietly going about his business of being the best golfer on the planet right now. Rain early in the week rendered the hallowed venue soft and defenceless against the in-form 36 year old who set about racking up a record winning score of 20 under.
After 10 years of trying and tying second last year, the now 36 year old was calm and assured throughout on Sunday. When his lead contracted to one around the turn, you never got the sense that the back nine Sunday, where the tournament traditionally begins, was going to be his undoing. And so it proved as Johnson flexed his muscles again and powered to a five shot win Cameron Smith and Sungjae Im.
For Augusta, while it did yield a record winning score, it did also have its victories. The sight of a hapless Tiger Woods clocking up a 10 on the iconic 12th hole was a nightmarish watch. Maybe not so tough to watch, the victory of 63 year old Bernhard Langer against his 27 year old pummelling playing partner Bryson DeChambeau; the German getting the better of Bryson in round four and beating him by one shot for the tournament.
But the 2020 Masters belonged to one man, Dustin Johnson. His second major in 45 tries, his first since the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont. A man who has overcome personal issues and sporting heartbreak, and who has emerged hardened for the journey. A tradition like no other in a year like no other with a winner like no other.
