The 17th at Sawgrass was at its delightful best yesterday, rejecting just about 1 in every 4 tee shots.
The sun was shining, there was no significant wind, but the greenkeepers must've had some some with the green that hopped high in some spots and seemed a little more receptive in others. The collar this year is also trimmed, as Tommy Fleetwood found out to his cost when his safe middle of the green effort even managed to find its way to the drink.
The hole measured 143 yards and did yield 30 birdies, so it was by no means impossible but there were also 13 double bogeys and nine worse. Ben An made an 11 only to see Bob Tway go one better with 12.
An’s brush with history got plenty of social coverage:
On the day when the PGA Tour warned the players that every shot would be televised Ben An did this…..
No. 17 strikes again. Ben An records an 11 on the island green.
That's the second-highest score ever on the 17th in the ShotLink era. pic.twitter.com/1nZ8a6HvY4
