Tributes Pour In After Tragic Passing of Carne Golf Club Captain Bernie McAndrew

It was great sadness that I learned of the death of Bernie McAndrew, the 2020 Captain of Carne Golf Club Belmullet in our own County of Mayo. Mrs McAndrew was a hugely popular local nurse.
The area of Belmullet has been particularly badly hit by the third wave of Covid-19 and both Bernie and her husband Ian had contracted the virus last week.

Then, as the Irish Examiner reported, on Sunday night
“Residents of a small village watched in horror as a popular local nurse who died of Covid-19 was taken away by hearse, just as an ambulance arrived to take her husband to hospital.”
Tributes have poured in for the “kind” and “compassionate” local woman.

It was with profound sadness and deep deep shock that we heard the news this morning of the passing of last year's Lady Captain Bernie McAndrew.
A quiet lady ,full of discretion and integrity Bernie served as Lady Captain in 2004 and again last year,2020.
She was a great Club representative, having served in many roles in the Ladies Club throughout the years.
She will be missed by so many people, particularly by her husband Ian, her own family, her in-laws and by her wide circle of work and golfing friends.
The whole community has been rocked by the news of her death.
May her very gentle soul Rest in Peace.
Happier Times at Carne
Carne Golf Links said the news had ‘devastated’ all in the area. “Bernie was a stalwart member of Belmullet Golf Club and the club’s most recent Lady Captain. She was welcoming to new members, was so caring, and nurturing to many junior golfers, and was always there for the ladies that have called the course home throughout the year. She will be greatly missed by all here at Carne.”
The board members and staff of Áras Inis Gluaire in Belmullet where Bernie’s husband Ian is manager, also expressed their sympathy to the family.
“The board members and staff of Áras Inis Gluaire wish to express their deepest sympathies to manager, Ian McAndrew on the untimely passing of his wife Bernie. Bernie was a kind, considerate, and thoughtful person, she will be greatly missed by Ian, family, and her many friends. “
Local Fine Gael councillor Gerry Coyle said the news has ‘stunned’ the area.
“She was a wonderful woman from a good and decent family. A great community person who always looked out for others and was there to help at any time,” said Cllr Coyle. “This has rocked the whole area,” he added.
May Mrs McAndrew Rest In Peace and wishing Ian a speedy recovery.
