I don’t know whether this is a good or bad thing but the PGA Tour, clearly concerned that Bryson and others are finding new ways to cut corners with their huge driving and not “play” the golf courses as intended, have added an internal out of bounds to the 18th hole at Sawgrass for this week’s Players Championship.

Organisers said it was due to ‘safety concerns’ for volunteers but those arose after Bryson said in his winners press conference last week that he might consider driving left of the lake on 18 at Sawgrass. I don’t know if there’s actually much benefit distance wise of going left on the hole or to shorten the hole but it would in theory leave an easier second shot in to the green.
“I have thought about sometimes on 18 going left into 9,” DeChambeau said after his victory Sunday. “We’ll see, with the stands and everything, if it’s even worth it … it just gives you a better shot into the green, personally, where you can just hit it a little long and you’re always going to be OK.”
The official statement from the Tour:

Finally the PGA Tour is getting worried about distance.
