Players slipping out of the top-50 and not being able to access the Majors and biggest events was always going to happen as long as Peter Dawson and the Official World Golf Rankings continue not to recognise LIV Golf. BUT ironically this has happened Patrick Reed whose strategy to gain ranking points has seen him play in both the DP World Tour’s BMW Championship (where he came T5) and the French Open.
Last week in Paris was one to forget for Reed. A nightmare. He got no interview slot in the media tent, no press, no pro-am invite, the worst tee times, no TV coverage, was ignored by pretty much everyone in the locker room and missed the cut.
The week ended up costing him one vital world ranking place, slipping from 50 to 51.
Now Patrick Reed does himself no favours whatsoever in terms of ‘mixing’ and being ‘social’ but he is an honorary life member of the European Tour and was kindof getting a teeny bit of kudos for showing up despite not needing the “money.” I do mean teeny as he did also say he wanted to spend more time with his wife and children and he’s currently set to play seven weeks in a row!!
Not to mention the comical $750m defamation lawsuit against Brandel Chamblee and the Golf Channel.
Reed will play this week at DP World Tour’s Dunhill Links Championship. He’s one of 17 LIV players in the field and lots of ranking points up for grabs. Again there’s bound to be tension between both camps but possibly not as much, as Johann Rupert runs the event and he’s not a man that likes the Tour imposing ‘bans’ or players being treated unfairly.
Let’s see what happens!
