$4 Million No Brainer For Brooks Koepka To Basically Add A Srixon Driver

Brooks Koepka was famous in our golf equipment nerd community as being the last true “free agent” in golf.  Not any more.
On the week of his “Match” against Bryson DeChambeau four-time major winner Koepka was  announced as a fully fledged Cleveland/Srixon Tour staffer.
The terms of the multi-year agreement were not made public, but golf insiders believe it is in the region of $4 million dollars a year.  He is also a Nike “athlete” which includes wearing a Nike cap, which hurts in negotiations.

From now on Brooks will use a Srixon ZX5 driver, ZX7 irons, Cleveland RTX ZipCore wedges and the Z-Star Prototype ball with Ricky carrying a Srixon Tour staff bag.  He can still use his TaylorMade M2 fairway, the Nike Vapor Pro 3 iron and his Scotty Cameron putter.
Hideki Matsuyama is Cleveland/Srixon’s poster boy in the company's homeland of Japan but the quality of the brand is well respected on Tour with players like Shane Lowry, GMacKeegan Bradley and others using their clubs.
The reality for Brooks is the changes will be minimal for him. He's already using (and has won with) the ZX7 irons and Srixon's capacity to produce a ball that will work for him is beyond question with their pedigree in the field.
The “risk” if there is a risk is the new driver, the ZX5. The reality is 9 of every 10 drivers sold come from TaylorMade, Callaway, PING, Titleist or Cobra. So it's difficult for Srixon.  And this investment in Brooks will aim to secure that 10 spot. Srixon also have a better player's driver, the ZX7, so its interesting that Brooks has chosen the ZX5.

The distance numbers stack up well, the ZX5 has a carbon crown and a new titanium alloy cup face with its own rebound frame technology.  Forgiveness wise Srixon say the MOI is over 5,000 g/cm but it's not in the league of say a Ping driver, but again decent.  If anything could be improved, the ZX5 is quite a Plain Jane looking black driver, which doesn't excite the potential customer like some of the others, but again with Brooks on board, he might help with development.
Here's what Brooks will play in The Match.
Driver: Srixon ZX5 (9.5 deg) with a Mitsubishi Diamana D+ 70 TX  shaft.
3-wood: TaylorMade M2 Tour HL (16.5 deg) with a Mitsubishi Diamana D+ 80 TX shaft.
Irons: Nike Vapor Pro 3-iron with a Fujikura Pro Tour Spec 95 X shaft. Srixon ZX7 (4-PW) with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts.
Wedges: Cleveland RTX ZipCore – Tour Rack Raw (52, 56, 60) with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shafts.
Putter: Scotty Cameron T10 Select Newport 2 Prototype
Ball: Srixon Z Star Prototype
