Favourite Watch
Collin Morikawa and Rory McIlroy are the big draw for the new DP World Tour this week at 7/1. Given that Rory was walking around my home village of Cong in Mayo last weekend I’m not sure how up for this he is!!
Doc’s Top 5 Best Each Way Bets
Tyrrell Hatton 25/1
Winner in Abu Dhabi last year and went to also score a T6 in Saudi a fortnight later to come home with over $1.5 million in the bank from his desert swing. There is a new host course this year, Yas Links Abu Dhabi (which I’ve played and think these guys will destroy) but judging by all those gyms sessions I’m seeing on Instagram Tyrrell will come flying out of the blocks this week.
Tommy Fleetwood 28/1
Back to back winner in 2017 and 2018 and T7, T2 in the last two stagings say Tommy will be as dangerous here as he was up the road at Abu Dhabi Golf Club. Finished last year like a train with five top-15 finishes from his last seven events.
Bernd Wiesberger 35/1
Super end to 2021 where he constantly contended. Posted first in greens hit in three of his last five starts one of which was that T2 in the Aviv Dubai Championship. Still doesn’t convert all of his chances on the greens, but when he gets the putter going Bernd wins.
Thomas Pieters 40/1
Six top-20’s since September 2021 with the highlight for Thomas being a win in Portugal. Hasn’t done so well of late in Abu Dhabi but has three top-5’s since 2015 in the event and the change of venue may very well suit him.
Rafa Cabrera Bello 110/1
Always keeps himself in good nick so not too worried about a post Christmas belly with Rafa. Bound to be still buoyed by winning the Open de Espana towards the end of last season and always there or thereabouts in Abu Dhabi. Solo 4th in 2021.
Long Odds Glory Shots
Chris Paisley 750/1
Played his best golf of the season in Abu Dhabi and Qatar last year but really struggled after. Wishing Chris a better 2022 in a place that brings out his best golf.
Pablo Larrazabal 250/1
Former winner who can still mix it with the best on his day. Still regularly punctuates missed cuts with top-20’s on Tour. You never know!
