Houston Open Betting Preview and Tips
November 5th – 8th, 2020
Memorial Park Golf Course, Houston, Texas
Par: 72 / Yardage: 7,432
Purse: $7 million with $1,260,000 to the winner
Defending Champion: Lanto Griffin
Form is your only guide heading to the new (very old) venue of Memorial Park for the Houston Open after a Tom Doak facelift with some suggestions from Brooks Koepka.
Only 32 players in the field will go on to compete in the Masters next week. Of those only they know who'll treat this week as a dress rehearsal and who will go full gas.
Favourite Watch
Dustin Johnson is the favourite at 7/1 but surely every golf fan in the UK and Ireland knows that Tyrrell Hatton at 16/1 is THE man this week. 7th at the Tour Championship, winner of the BMW PGA at Wentworth, back to the US for a T3 at the CJ Cup. All five of his professional wins have come in October and November.
Doc's Top Five Best Each Way Bets
Russell Henley 22/1
Perennial performer and 2017 winner of the April edition of the Houston Open, Henley comes in off a T4 at the Zozo and T3 at the CJ Cup. The University of Georgia graduate has clocked up 44 birdies in those last two starts with excellent driving and greens stats.
Stewart Cink 75/1
The Indian Summer that brought Stewart Cink back into the winners circle at the Safeway Open also guided him to an impressive T4 in a windy Bermuda last week. Raining down balls onto greens in regulation give him a chance each-way everywhere just now.
Scottie Scheffler 22/1
Over Covid and a T17 at the Zozo may be taken as an indicator that Scottie is returning to the kind of form that brought him top-5 finishes at the PGA Championship, Northern Trust (where he shot that 59) and Tour Championship. Well versed in Texas golf as a student, he should go well here.
Doc Redman 50/1
A good T4 last week in Bermuda was the product of solid driving which is going to be crucial again this week. And when he misses Redman has the tidy short game to deal with the quirky collection areas here. Finished the Safeway with a 62 for a T3 there and I love a battler.
Zach Johnson 40/1
Look I don’t know how the PGA Tour will choose to play the refurbished Memorial Park this week but having spoken to my guys at the course the keys to success are accuracy off the tee in order to find the seriously undulating green complexes. It all sounds like the place Zach Johnson would thrive in. Nobody hit more greens at the Shriners and Sanderson farms than Zach and he showed with a T8 at the US Open that he's still able to contend.
Long Odds Glory Shots
Padraig Harrington 140/1
T26 last week in Bermuda, sure why not. Has to be buoyed by the recent form of guys like Sergio, Cink and co. Still has the fire and the game. As evidenced by the best lockdown videos on twitter in 2020.
Beau Hossler 125/1
Solid mid table performer who rolled his rock well in Bermuda last week. Worth watching.
