WITB: 6 Year Old Driver Wins For Bryson DeChambeau At 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational

You have to hand it to Bryson at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.  He gets so much stick on social media, and maybe sometimes deservedly, but for all his bluster he backs it up. Every time!

Case in point being he said he’d go for the ridiculous gamble of attempting to drive near the green on the par-5 6th hole at Bay Hill….and then he does it! Twice!  Whether it contributed to his winning the event is certainly debatable given the way he played the hole after but what it does show is DeChambeau’s massive desire and determination to win.

The tournament itself has a hum dinger.  The course was a true test, the wind was up Sunday and the crowds roared as the putts poured in.  Dare I say it was just like the old days!?  In the end DeChambeau’s 11-under was good enough to outlast 47 year old Lee Westwood who himself can take huge heart from a vintage week of excellent golf.

For DeChambeau it’s his eighth PGA Tour win in 117 events and afterwards he was emotional as he spoke of his pre round chat with Tiger Woods citing the Rocky line “it’s not how many times you get knocked down, it’s how many times you get back up and keep fighting.”

Still not happy with his Radspeed driver numbers DeChambeau went back to his Cobra King LTD Pro driver to make those iconic carries.  This driver was released in 2015 and gives pause for thought about where technology is, or maybe is not, going.

Using his Cobra King LTD Pro driver Bryson averaged 324.1 yards from the tee, topping the stats.  He hit 32 fairways for the week, T25 in the field and posted a clip of 1.210 Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee Sunday.

With his trademark Cobra King Forged Tour One Length irons he found 50 greens in regulation for the week, second only to Lee Westwood in this stat and fashioned a 2.251 Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green performance when it mattered most in the final round.

On the greens DeChambeau registered 1.857 putts per GIR and 2.235 Strokes Gained: Putting with 31 total putts, including a clutch 49’9″ par-save at the par-4 11th with his SIK Pro C-Series Armlock putter. For the week, he circled 18 birdies against seven bogeys and topped the field in Driving Distance, Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee with +7.042.

With the win Bryson climbs from 11th in the world up to 6th in the latest rankings.
