How brilliant was The Players? The roar of the crowds, carnage on 17, a stacked final round leaderboard and a winning performance from Justin Thomas for the ages.
From a European point of view we had plenty to cheer with Sergio and Rahm cameoing, Shane Lowry having a great Sunday to top-10 and Lee Westwood again battling to the very death but ultimately coming up one short.
For Thomas it’s hard to believe that this is win number 14 of his short career. From struggling in LA and Abu Dhabi to suffering the loss of his Grandfather to lifting The Players Trophy and all but locking in a future Hall Of Fame spot, it’s been a rollercoaster few weeks for the 27 year old.
Thomas’s management of Pete Dye’s Sawgrass on Sunday was sensational. Coming from three back of Westwood at the start of the day his 68 saw him hit the first 17 greens in regulation and just came up short of making it a perfect 18 by inches on the last.
And that right to left draw on command? How useful will that be at Augusta at odds of 12/1?
Golf was never gone for long, but at The Players it was truly back!
