Bombs bombs bombs! That's all many people thought Phil Mickelson at 50 years and 11 months was interested in. Hitting bombs! Or spraying them more like. But then a new Phil arrived at Kiawah Island, armed with two drivers, hitting these arrow straight, low, knuckle ball drives that changed everything. Now his ball was in play again, he could be the old Phil again. Suddenly that half century of age was flipped instantly into a half century of experience that propelled him to victory.
And so it was the 103rd PGA Championship at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island became the sixth Major title for Phil Mickelson, making him the oldest winner of all time. Hats off also to runners-up Louis Oosthuizen and Brooks Koepka who nipped at Phil's heels but in the end had to bend the knee. Notable others included Rickie Fowler returning to form with a T4, shared with the wonderful final day pairing of Padraig Harrington and Shane Lowry, off in their own world, chatting and laughing, playing each other on a Sunday for fun…. and climbing the leaderboard in the process.
There was just something wonderful about the whole occasion. Maybe thats because it WAS an occasion again. Phil the fan favourite, emerging through the swarm of support on 18 was the icing on the cake. Majors are back. Phil is back. Bombs are back!

How He Did It
Interchanging his Callaway Epic Speed Triple Diamond driver with a TaylorMade “Original One” Mini Driver Phil found 31 fairways for the week, averaging 313.3 yards but more importantly kept his ball in play. Showcasing the Callaway Apex MB ‘21 irons Lefty found 46 greens in regulation, T12 in the field. Then using his old trusty Odyssey Milled Blade Phil went to work on the Kiawah greens, rolling in 22 birdies versus 14 bogeys and one double. Mickelson ended the week ranked first in Total Birdies and Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green with +12.903.
Shot of the final round came on the par-3 fifth, where he holed out from greenside sand with his Callaway PM Grind 60 degree wedge to steady the ship after a shaky start.
