The Claret Jug, full to the brim again with excitement, drama and the very worthiest of winners in American Collin Morikawa.
After a year away The Open once again proved why it is the ultimate test of golf.  There was Louis Oosthuizen, the fan favourite, but ultimately the bridesmaid yet again.  Then there was Jordan Spieth; we all know the dodgy shot is coming at some point but this Texan is tough as old boots and never goes away. He showed true grit to finish second.
But Morikawa is the new breed of Champion. He's the real deal. Quiet, courteous, respectful of the test and rich history of The Open and when it came to the clutch moments possessed the steely nerve to get the job done.
Elsewhere the story of the week included Bryson who bombed and bludgeoned and blamed as he quickly got found out on links.  Brooks didn't fancy the test but he stuck to his task, as he always does, and finished strong.   As did Shane Lowry who can be very happy with his Open defence.  Bob MacIntyre was the leading home player to add to his stock.  Jon Rahm, incredibly finished in a tie for third after a stunning 66.  Stunning for the run he made at the end, stunning for the amount of putts he left out on the course!
And so another Major season comes to a close.  Hideki took the Green Jacket at The Masters.  Then Phil rolled back the years to win the PGA Championship just shy of his 51st birthday.  Jon Rahm grabbed the bull by the horns to win the US Open at Torrey Pines……and now Collin Morikawa made his own piece of history in becoming the first player to win two Majors on his debut.
2022 has a lot to live up to!

Stats: How He Did It

Using a TaylorMade SIM driver Morikawa posted a fairways found clip of 60.61% for the week.  The 24 year old blended in TaylorMade P7MC irons with a P770 long iron and P730 wedge to hit 54 of 72 greens in regulation including 14 of 18 in the pressure filled atmosphere of the final round. On the green the new Open Champion was imperious averaging 1.54 putts per green in regulation with his TaylorMade TP Juno. In total he circled 19 birdies for the week versus just four bogeys none of which came on Sunday.
